This artifact is inspired by the reaction diffusion algorithm which simulates the behaviours of reacting and diffusing of two virtual chemicals across a two-dimensional grid. The Gray-Scott model associated with the algorithm offers a wide range of possibilities for the emergence of diverse and unique complex forms, shapes and behaviours out of the system. Instead of simply displaying the system in two-dimension, the resultant patterns from the system are in turn used for three-dimensional geometries as textures and material maps to create more interesting looks. In the meantime, the visual elements are further modified by the real-time data generated by the audience’s interactions with a Leap Motion controller. Therefore, the artefact also aims to create an interactive and engaging experience somehow akin to a hand clay moulding experience in the real world but a rather simplified one. That said, the audience is allowed to manipulate specific characteristics (colour, speed, and types of patterns) of the 3D-generated reaction diffusion geometry in real-time and save the result as image files.
